The Congregation
“The Daughters of the Cross, will never separate the love of God from the love of people … our response to this great love, is to honour Christ, by loving and serving Him, above all in the poorest, weakest, and most suffering people.” Mother Marie Thérèse of Liege Foundress of our Congregation - The Daughters of the Cross of Liège.

The many sisters of the Congregation of the Daughters of the Cross bring joy in the midst of suffering and give hope to all those with whom they come in contact through education, medicine and nursing, and pastoral and social care. Worldwide the Congregation is active in Belgium, Germany, England, Italy, Ireland, Brazil, USA, Africa, India, Pakistan and Nepal.
In India, The Daughters of the Cross of the Bombay Province serve in U.P, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa. A group of six Sisters of the province are missioned to Cameroun. The Calcutta Province has convents in West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Nepal, and Kerala. The Sisters go where they are needed.

We have St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in the Bombay Province and another hospital in the Calcutta Province in Gaya Ganga. There are also several outreach programmes conducted by the 2 hospitals.

In rural areas the emphasis is on community health through dispensaries, and the training of village health workers. Here we help patients through curative medicine. We strive to do this using rational drug therapy. Health Education looks after the preventive aspect, and the training of village health workers benefits the people, who do not need to go to dispensaries far away for ailments that can be treated in the village itself.
Education
Jeanne Haze (later our Foundress, Mother Marie Thérèse of Liège) realized that the ravages of war had affected the youth of her day and she decided to educate the young girls of Liege, Belgium. When faced with the choice of a school for the rich or one for the poor, she chose the poor school even though that lessened her earnings for the family.

Regarding education she insisted “Do not vegetate” and again she said to her teachers “Use the best methods”. Little wonder then that the Daughters of the Cross excelled in education and they spread to Germany, England and even India. Today we have several schools and two Colleges.

Education for special children, the deaf and mute children, adults with epilepsy, emotionally disturbed children, those with learning disabilities… differently-abled children, the deprived, vulnerable and the weak and many more, there is place for all.

Methods in Education have changed tremendously with Computers, Audiovisuals etc. and efforts are made to use the best methods as our Foundress wanted.
